Project Hail Mary Trading Cards announced by Cardsmiths

Cardsmiths has announced an officially licensed Project Hail Mary Trading Card Mini Set, timed to coincide with the release of the Project Hail Mary film, the blockbuster sci-fi adaptation starring Ryan Gosling that opened worldwide in March 2026 to extraordinary reviews and a $141 million global opening weekend.

Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s 2021 novel of the same name (Weir also wrote The Martian). Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film follows Ryland Grace (Gosling), a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of how he got there, and gradually remembers he’s on a one-way mission to save Earth from a mysterious organism that is dimming the Sun. Sandra Hüller and Milana Vayntrub co-star, with creature performer James Ortiz voicing Rocky, the alien companion whose unlikely friendship with Grace anchors the film’s emotional core.

The film currently holds a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart. Audiences have compared the Grace/Rocky dynamic to E.T. in terms of its human-and-alien bond.

What’s in the set?

The Project Hail Mary Trading Card Mini Set is available to pre-order now at $39.99 per pack, shipping from May 1, 2026.

Card art covers pivotal characters, scenes, and imagery from the film’s narrative — including Ryland Grace and the spacecraft’s interstellar journey. The headline feature is the pack guarantee: every single pack contains both a Rainbow Holofoil and a Serial-Numbered Gemstone Refractor™ card.

Guaranteed hits per pack:

  • Rainbow Holofoil — 1 per pack
  • Serial-Numbered Gemstone Refractor™ — 1 per pack (numbered print run)

To put that in context: in Cardsmiths’ flagship Currency Series, Gemstone Refractors typically fall at around 1 in 7–10 packs. Guaranteeing one per pack signals this set is designed to be accessible, which is great for film fans picking up their first Cardsmiths pack, and still appealing for collectors who want the guaranteed numbered hit.

The full card count and checklist haven’t been published yet. As usual, once Cardsmiths releases the complete set details and pulls are start being discovered by the community, we will make the set available in our TCG collection tracking platform, HoloHoard app.

Card previews

What serialised Refractors might the set include?

Cardsmiths hasn’t published the full variant list for the Project Hail Mary set yet, but their licensed entertainment sets follow a consistent pattern that gives us a solid basis for educated guessing.

Their flagship Currency Series 5 features a deep serialised ladder running from Tanzanite (/299) all the way down to Onyx (1/1). That’s over a dozen named Gemstone variants in total which has made collectors run around like crazy! For licensed mini sets, however, Cardsmiths typically uses a much tighter selection. Looking at Killer Klowns from Outer Space Series 1 as a more directly-comparable example, the serialised lineup was: Emerald (/99), Amethyst (/49), Ruby (/25), Gold (/10), Cotton Candy (/7), Sapphire (/5), and Onyx (1/1).

We’ve had a look at the two preview cards Cardsmiths has released so far, one has a distinctly blue tone, one reads red — which makes Ruby (/25) and Sapphire (/5) reasonable speculation for this set’s serialised lineup. Onyx (1/1) is a near-constant across Cardsmiths’ licensed catalogue and almost certainly appears here too.

None of this is confirmed yet, and the exact Gemstone selection can vary between sets — Killer Klowns included a set-exclusive Cotton Candy variant that appeared in no other series. Project Hail Mary could introduce its own thematic variant in a similar vein. We’ll update this section the moment Cardsmiths releases the complete checklist.

Who are Cardsmiths?

Cardsmiths is a US-based collectible card publisher best known for creating the Currency Series — a non-sport TCG built around the history of money, cryptocurrency, and economic culture. The series launched in 2022, now spans five numbered entries and several seasonal sets, and has built a strong community that skews toward crypto-adjacent collectors and pop-culture enthusiasts.

What distinguishes Cardsmiths technically is their extensive Serial-Numbered Gemstone Refractor™ system — a numbered parallel treatment applied across virtually all of their sets. Every card in a Gemstone run carries a unique serial number, making set completion genuinely difficult and giving even base-set subjects real chase appeal. They’ve also introduced seasonal variants over time: the Snowflake Gemstone Refractor (holiday sets) and Sol Gemstone Refractor (summer sets), some of which are retroactively applied to earlier base cards — creating a layered, ever-expanding rarity ecosystem that rewards long-term collectors.

Beyond the Currency Series, Cardsmiths has built an ambitious licensed entertainment catalogue. Their current lineup includes:

  • Currency Series 1–5 — their flagship, covering finance, crypto culture, and economic history
  • SPACE: Galactic Edition — an 80-card set exploring the universe, from astronomers and spaceflight technology to mythology and the search for extraterrestrial life
  • Wednesday — officially licensed cards from the Netflix series
  • Street Fighter Series 1 + Street Fighter Alpha — officially licensed by Capcom, covering fighters, stages, and iconic matchups
  • Mega Man X — the Maverick Wars on card stock, also officially licensed from Capcom
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer — licensed cards from the iconic TV series
  • Golden Girls — the classic sitcom gets the Cardsmiths treatment
  • Bob Ross — officially licensed Bob Ross themed set
  • Dragon’s Lair and Killer Klowns — rounding out a catalogue that spans nostalgia, gaming, and pop culture

Why this set is worth watching

The thematic fit is strong. Cardsmiths’ production quality translates well to celestial subjects and we’ve seen this with SPACE series — their foil treatments, particularly the Rainbow Holofoils and Refractors, are genuinely well-suited to deep-space imagery and dramatic lighting. Project Hail Mary gives their artists a rich cinematic visual language to work with: spacecraft design, alien biology, and high-stakes human drama in the void.

The film’s audience is the right audience. This is playing as a broad crowd-pleaser, and at $39.99 with guaranteed hits per pack, the entry point is accessible to casual buyers who might never have opened a Cardsmiths pack before. That’s a meaningful expansion of the potential collector base.

Serialized cards have shown staying power. Numbered Gemstone Refractors from Cardsmiths’ earliest Currency releases now command meaningful premiums on the secondary market. If Project Hail Mary holds the kind of cultural staying power that early audience response suggests, the initial print run of a numbered mini set could look very attractive in retrospect. It’s speculative, but it’s a low-cost bet at this price point.
